KC Council to Hold Public Hearing on Sunrise Coal Request

The Knox County Council has agreed to hold a public hearing next month for a first step toward a tax abatement for Sunrise Coal. The company is seeking designation of its property as an economic revitalization area. If that is granted, the company can ask for a tax abatement on new equipment and property.
Council members learned Sunrise wants to expand its Knox County workforce. Over the next four years, the coal mining company expects to mine eight million tons of coal per year. They also plan to add at least 25 mining jobs in Knox County, with pay rates in the area of 75-thousand dollars per year.
The public hearing on the economic revitalization designation will be held during next month’s Council meeting on Tuesday, April ninth.
