Washington Residents Reminded of Tree Limb Removal Rules

By Tom Zimmerman Mar 26, 2026 | 5:00 AM

With spring here and summer on the way, the Washington Street Department reminds residents: if you hire someone to trim or cut trees, you must get a city permit before work starts.

Contractors are responsible for cleaning up and removing all limbs and debris—not the city.

If they don’t, the landowner must handle removal.

If homeowners do their own trimming, limbs for pickup must be neatly stacked at the street or alley with cut ends facing out, in piles no higher or longer than 4 feet.

Tangled debris must be untangled or discarded by the property owner before pickup.
