Nancy “Smith” McGlone Johnson, a cherished matriarch and friend to all, passed away on August 3, 2025, in Linton, Indiana. Born on July 8, 1940, in Edwardsport, Indiana, she walked through life with a wisdom, love, and friendliness that touched everyone she met.

Nancy’s life was steeped in love and dedication, beginning with her marriage to the love of her life, Carl McGlone, on October 24, 1959. Together, they raised two beautiful children, Ruth and Michael. Her role as a mother was one she treasured and excelled at, and it expanded joyfully as she became a grandmother and great-grandmother. After Carl’s passing in 1975, she found love again with Ed Johnson, with whom she shared 22 wonderful years until his passing in 1999.

A steadfast pillar of the community, Nancy’s warmth extended beyond her family. She nurtured many children during her time as a matron at Sandborn and North Knox East Elementary Schools. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, as she taught Sunday School at the Edwardsport First Baptist Church and exemplified the principles of kindness and service.

Sports and community were intertwined in Nancy’s life, particularly through her time coaching the Edwardsport Girls’ Softball Team alongside Carl and their best friends, Lanny and Cris Fulford. Nancy’s vibrant spirit made her an unforgettable presence, cheering on the sidelines at countless games and providing the loudest and most encouraging support for her beloved children and grandchildren.

Creative talents also flowed from Nancy’s fingers as she crocheted numerous afghans, each a tapestry of her love and care. While her hands created these masterpieces until they could no longer manage, they are treasured beyond measure by each family member, having wrapped themselves in the love she poured into every stitch.

Her passing leaves a profound absence in the lives of her loving family, including her children, Ruth DeCoursey (Kenny) and Micheal McGlone (Monica); her cherished grandchildren, Josh DeCoursey, Adam DeCoursey, Brock McGlone (Maria), and Mika Stanczak (Kevin); her treasured step-grandchildren, Sydney Loveland, Isaac Phares (Bonnie), Isaiah Phares, Israel Phares, and Isabella May; beloved bonus grandchildren, Sara Moore and Kash Baughn; and adored great-grandchildren, Brandon DeCoursey, Jenna DeCoursey, Ason DeCoursey, Mya McGlone, Danyka McGlone, Maeve Stanczak, and Mara Stanczak. Her sister, JoAnn Smith, along with many nieces and nephews, also survive her.

Predeceased by her parents, Jess and Nora “Potter” Smith, husbands Carl McGlone and Ed Johnson, siblings Colleen Tolliver and Billy Smith, her granddaughter Jenni DeCoursey, and great-grandchildren Oliver and Nora Stanczak, Nancy’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by those she has left behind. Her life exemplified how to love fiercely, support unconditionally, and live with an open heart. Nancy McGlone Johnson’s light, though no longer present in body, continues to shine in the many lives she touched.

The family would like to thank Glenburn Home’s nurses and staff for the wonderful care and concern they gave to our mother. Your kindness did not go unnoticed. Also, a thank you goes out to Viaquest for allowing our mother’s last days to be peaceful.
