Norma “Jean” Dixon

Norma “Jean” Dixon, of Vincennes, Indiana, departed this life on May 20, 2026, at her home with several of her children by her side.

 

She was born in Lawrenceville, Illinois, on July 23, 1931, the daughter of the late Ray and Agnes “Snider” Garvey. She grew up on the farm in St. Francisville, Illinois, with her siblings, John Garvey and Emma Jane “Garvey” Brown. Jean attended and graduated from St. Francisville Catholic School. She later attended and graduated from the Vincennes Business College.

 

Jean met the love of her life, Noble J. Dixon, through mutual friends. They married in St. Francisville, Illinois, on May 27, 1950. They were blessed with 12 children of which she was proud of each one of them and their achievements in life. For many years, Jean was a homemaker raising their 11 surviving children. As her children got older, she worked at Gates Studio and Bridal Shop as a bookkeeper and sales clerk for approximately 20 years.

 

Jean was active with her church, St. John the Baptist, together with the Ladies Auxiliary. She was also active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. She held many offices, including President. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states, including trips abroad. She had many stories to tell about her travels with Noble and her children, especially about seeing Pope Francis in Italy with her daughter, Janis.

 

Jean is survived by her children, Jim, of Anchorage, Alaska; Bob, of the Villages, Florida; Marilyn (Dexter) Pea, of Freelandville, Indiana; Shirley Kiel, of Vincennes, Indiana; Janis (Reg) McKinley, of the Villages, Florida; Jane Ann (Kurt) Keyes, of the Villages, Florida; John Patrick, of Vincennes, Indiana; Steve (Melody), of Indianapolis, Indiana; Paul Christopher (Patty), of Vincennes, Indiana; and Susan (Rob) Geick, of Kansas City, Kansas. She is also survived by her 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, with another to be born in late summer of 2026. Her sister, Emma Jane (Dale) Brown, of the Villages, Florida, also survives.

 

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Noble J. Dixon; her son, Michael O. Dixon; infant son, Joseph Lee Dixon; infant great-granddaughter, Mattingly Dixon; her parents, Ray and Agnes Garvey; and her brother, John Garvey. She was also preceded in death by her daughters-in-law, Kathy “Adams” Dixon and Melissa “Moyes” Dixon.

 

A service will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at St. John’s Catholic Church on Main Street in Vincennes, Indiana, at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Tony Ernst, with calling hours immediately preceding from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at the Church. Jean will be laid to rest next to her husband, Noble J. Dixon, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Vincennes, Indiana.
