Lela Ann Layer, age 65, of Oaktown, Indiana, passed away on June 12, 2026. She was born on April 14, 1961, in Vincennes, Indiana, and lived her life with a quiet strength, a loving heart, and a deep devotion to the people she held dear.
Lela was a beloved daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest joy came from being surrounded by her family. She is survived by her mother, Linda L. “Lynch” Layer; her children, Melissa Hubble (Brad), Sarah Tomey (Cody), and Jacob Parks (Nikki); her sister, Darlene Layer; her brother, Sean Lynch (Renee); her ten grandchildren, Cierra, Autumn, Mitchell, Brookelyn, Trever, Rex, Gavin, Landon, Sophia Louann, and Colt; her two great-grandchildren, Quinton and Hudson; and her nephew, Nathan Brough. She was preceded in death by her father, Rex Layer, and her brother, Doug Layer.
Throughout her life, Lela worked multiple jobs and was known for her dependable nature. Among the places she worked were Sunoco for the Bledsoe family, who became dear friends, and later Casey’s in Oaktown and the FastBreak Convenience Store. She approached her work with dedication and a willingness to help wherever she was needed, and those who worked alongside Lela appreciated her steady presence and kind spirit.
Lela found her greatest happiness in the simple and meaningful moments of life. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren deeply and treasured every opportunity to spend time with them. Being at home brought her comfort and peace, and she especially valued the warmth of family and the joys of everyday life. Her love for her family was evident in all she did, and she will be remembered for the care and affection she gave so freely.
Those who knew Lela will remember her as a woman with a gentle heart and a loving nature. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will remain a lasting source of comfort and love to her family and friends.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Oaktown Chapel.
