After 80 years of good jokes, great crops, and endless love, Michael “Mike” Ray Held tipped his hat to a life exceptionally well-lived on Friday afternoon, August 14, 2026. Passing away peacefully at his home outside Freelandville, Indiana, Mike officially traded in his tractor keys for a front-row seat to the ultimate sunset.
Mike lived a Life Rooted in Faith, Love, and Good Soil Born in Knox County on August 8, 1946, Mike grew up with dirt on his boots. He was an athlete at Freelandville High School, he proudly walked as part of the very first graduating class of the consolidated North Knox Schools in 1964. He then took his talents to Purdue University, completing the College of Agriculture Short Course in 1965.
Mike’s true love story began when he locked eyes with Alice Ann Palmer at a 4-H Junior Leader Conference. Sparks flew, a high school romance blossomed, and on September 26, 1965, they tied the knot. For over six decades, Mike and Alice put on a masterclass in what a real “love story for the ages” looks like— working together, playing together, serving God, and building an incredible family side by side.
Mike farmed his entire life, pouring his heart into farming and caretaking for animals. Among his many beloved cattle, the legendary cow Black Betty #12 held a special place of memories, and he was rarely seen on the farm without a loyal four-legged co-pilot—most notably his dogs Teddy, Sugar, Bear, Luke and his cherished Border Collie, Blake.
When he wasn’t working on the tractor or enjoying the warm sunshine as a Florida “snowbird” with Alice in Bradenton, Mike was deeply committed to serving others. He was a Master Mason, an Exalted Ruler of the Elks, and dedicated his time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer, standing up for kids who needed a voice. He served as the Widner Township Trustee for years, a Freelandville Volunteer Fire Department member, was a North Knox School Board member also serving as President, and a member of Bethel Church. He served on many church and community choirs.
Of all his connections, one of his absolute favorites was with his Best Buddy. Mike found true joy is late night conversations with his grandson, Wyant, talking shop about family ancestry, history, heritage, and daily happenings of farming.
Mike leaves behind family where he would want to keep the stories alive and the smiles big. The Love of His Life: Alice Ann (Palmer) Held, his Children: Kimberly Lynn King (Joe) and Brian Scott Held (Dena), His Grandkids: Wyant Chester Held (Jocelyn), Taylor Marie Sarah Held Smith (Clayton), and Rayne Ann Scott Held Roach (Hunter), His Great-Grandkids: Myers Lee Smith, Palmer Scott Smith, and Emberly Quinn Roach, His Sister: Marilyn Koenig (John); His Special Nieces & Families: Heather Turner (Shane), Erica Sallee (Brian), and great-nephews Sebastian, Xzavier, and great-niece Eleanor Sallee.
Welcoming Mike on the other side with open arms are his beloved parents, Peg and Chester Held, along with those favorite farm dogs waiting for a game of fetch.
To honor a man who brought so much light to those around him, a Celebration of Life will be hosted at a later date for all family and friends to share laughter, swap stories, and celebrate a job well done.
Online condolences and fond memories may be made at www.fredrickandson.com. Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel, is honored to be entrusted with Mike’s arrangements.
In lieu of heavy hearts, memorials may be made in Mike’s honor to Bethel Church.
“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one,
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when day is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun,
Of happy memories that I leave when my life is done.”
