For the first time since it was installed in 2021, a Safe Haven Baby Box at Terre Haute’s Sugar Creek Fire Department has been used. A mother placed her baby in the box to surrender it.
Lieutenant Dillon Massey says as he got closer he could hear the baby’s cries and immediately started to asses the little girl to make sure she was healthy. Massey stayed with the baby until extra help arrived.
As a reminder, the Vincennes Fire Department also contains a Safe Haven Baby Box for anyone needing to surrender a baby. The surrender may be made at any time, no questions asked. The box is located at V-F-D headquarters at Tenth and Vigo Streets in Vincennes.
