The National Weather Service says 17 tornadoes were on the ground last Thursday in Illinois and Northwest Indiana.
The severe weather caused significant power outages across the region.
A utility spokesperson added that it has restored power to 99 percent of those who were in the dark. Among the areas struck by the tornado was the campus of Andrean High School in Merrillville.
