Joseph M. Hartigan, age 75, of Oaktown, Indiana, passed away at his home on July 1, 2026. He was born on June 2, 1951, in Vincennes, Indiana, and lived a life marked by devotion to family, service, hard work, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Joseph & his brothers attended St. John’s Catholic School, then later graduated from Vincennes Lincoln High School, Class of 1969, which he treasured & remained very active with throughout his years. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy, an experience that reflected his sense of duty and commitment to something greater than himself. Following his military service, he worked for the Vincennes Water Utilities, where he was known for his steady work ethic and dependable nature. He took pride in doing his job well and in contributing to the community he called home.
Joseph was a devoted husband to his wife, Rose Marie “Duncan” Hartigan. Their marriage in his later years was a central part of his life, and he treasured the time they shared. Joseph had also been previously married to Kathy Haaff Hartigan, as well as to Debra S. Hartigan (the mother of his children). Joseph was also a father and grandfather, survived by his sons, Nicholas and Rob Hartigan, and by his six grandchildren, McKenzie Hartigan, Caitlin Hartigan, Jordan Hartigan, Haley Hartigan, Brody Hartigan, and Kylie Hartigan. He is also survived by his siblings, Mike Hartigan, Shela Henderson, & Steve Henderson. Joseph’s family will remember him for his fun-loving attitude & his love for family & friends.
Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie “Duncan” Hartigan; his parents, John W. (Bill) & Patricia “Halter” Hartigan; & his brother, Jack Hartigan.
Joseph enjoyed life in a way that reflected his adventurous spirit. He loved riding motorcycles as well as ATV’s with friends & family, traveling, target shooting, & home improvement projects. He also loved beach life, the ocean, pirate music, & trips to the Mexican restaurant. Those who knew him best will remember how much joy he found in these interests and how fully he embraced the moments that brought him happiness. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, an affiliation that reflected his faith, fellowship, and commitment to service.
Joseph Hartigan will be remembered as a hardworking, dedicated man who lived with purpose and sincerity. His life touched many, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Trevor Murry.
