Norma Sue Fremder, age 98, died in Terre Haute, Indiana, on August 4, 2026. She was born June 11, 1928, in Vincennes, Indiana, to Fred and Anna “Brown” Fremder. She received her early education at St. John’s Lutheran School and Lincoln High School in Vincennes. Norma earned degrees in music education from Indiana State Teachers College, now ISU, in Terre Haute, Indiana. She taught music in Vernon, Indiana, Lost Creek Township in Vigo County, and Vincennes Township in Knox County. After obtaining an elementary certificate, she taught upper grades in Martinsville and Vincennes, Indiana.
Sue was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, active in Vacation Bible School, Women’s Missionary League, Elderberries, and served on various boards and the Church Council, and directed the choir for thirty years. She was active in community vocal and instrumental groups, playing the violin and the viola. She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association and a past president of the Knox County Chapter. Moving to Westminster Village in Terre Haute in 2004, she attended Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a member of the Terre Haute Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, an honorary music fraternity for women.
Terre Haute survivors include her niece, Geri (Hal) Johnston, and sons; her nephew, Jeff Greiner (Shellie) and family; and in Marion, Iowa, her niece Paula Feltz (Larry) and family. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Wilma “Fremder” Greiner, and an infant brother.
Service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St John’s Lutheran Church, 707 N. 8th Street, Vincennes, Indiana, officiated by Pastor Ron Maxwell.
