Mayor Yochum Reflects on Snafu that Ended State Senate Run

By Tom Zimmerman Aug 20, 2026 | 5:00 AM

Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum is reacting to the administrative error that knocked him out of contention in the State Senate District 39 race.  Yochum was named by a District 39 caucus to replace the Democrat primary winner; however, a paperwork mistake ended his chances to run for that seat.

Mayor Yochum admits to being disappointed not to run—but also, because the seat is now un-opposed in November.  Instead, Yochum is glad to spend the next year-plus finishing his fourth term as Vincennes’ Mayor.

That means Republican Jeff Ellington will run un-opposed in the State Senate District 39 race.  He is set to replace Washington, Indiana’s Eric Bassler in that seat; Bassler decided not to run from another State Senate term.
