Johney Ray “John” Gilbert, 69, of Loogootee, Indiana, passed away on August 22, 2026, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana, surrounded by his loved ones.
John was born on April 7, 1957, in Washington, to John and Evelyn Gilbert. He graduated from Loogootee High School. He worked at Jasper Engines and later retired from OFS in Huntingburg, Indiana. Johney proudly served seven years in the United States Army.
John married Elizabeth Gilbert in 1992. She preceded him in death.
Johney loved fishing, hunting, spending time with his family and loved ones, attending concerts, playing cards, participating in shooting matches, playing bingo, and visiting casinos. He enjoyed traveling with his family, especially on vacations and cruises. One of his greatest joys was his beloved dog and special companion, Lady Trump, who was always by his side.
John will be lovingly remembered by his surviving family, including his brother, Jim (Dorothy) Gilbert of Loogootee; his brother, Marty Gilbert of Linton; his sister, Janet (Scott) Mullens of Vincennes; his uncle, Charles Robbins of Alfordsville, Indiana; three nieces; four nephews; and his beloved dog and companion, Lady Trump.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Evelyn Gilbert; his wife, Elizabeth Gilbert; his brother, Larry Gilbert; and a nephew.
Johney will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on through the many stories, adventures, and moments shared with those he loved.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Fredrick and Son-Gill Funeral Home. A service will follow at 6:00 p.m., with military honors.
