Larry Spangle, age 89, passed away on September 9, 2026, in Danville, IN. He was born on March 27, 1937, in Bicknell, Indiana, and lived a life marked by devotion to his family, steady work, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Larry was the beloved husband of Marilyn “Risley” Spangle, and the two were married on September 18, 1954. Their marriage was a lasting partnership built on love, loyalty, and shared years. He was a devoted father to Mike Spangle and Lisa Mohamed, and he took great pride in his family throughout his life. Larry was also a cherished grandfather to Jeffrey Peck, Kevin Peck (Ashley), Christopher Spangle (Reagan), Jessica Hamilton (Dave), Eric Spangle, and Breanna Spangle. His legacy lives on through his ten great-grandchildren, Alexa Peck, Grayson Peck, Lorelei Hamilton, Josephine Hamilton, Elenora Spangle, Matthew Spangle, Lucy Spangle, Alexandra Spangle, John Spangle, and Jules Spangle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Eloise “Heidenreich” Spangle. Their influence helped shape the man he became, and he carried the values of hard work, integrity, and family throughout his life.
Larry spent two years at IU, a time that reflected his commitment to learning and personal growth. He went on to work as a chemist for Eli Lilly, where he contributed his skills and dedication to his profession. His career was an important part of his life, and he was respected for the care and diligence he brought to his work.
Outside of his career, Larry enjoyed life’s many pleasures. He loved watching sports, especially football, and he was a loyal fan who enjoyed cheering on IU and the Colts. He also treasured his time spent in St. Augustine, Florida, where he found enjoyment and relaxation. These interests brought him happiness and gave him many memories to share with those around him.
Larry will be remembered as a kind and steady man who valued his family above all else. His presence brought comfort, his support was dependable, and his love was felt deeply by those closest to him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Mariah Creek Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Matt Hoffman.
