Injury Still Leading Cause of Child Deaths

Indiana Health Commissioner Lindsay Weaver says injury remains the leading cause of death for children in Indiana and nationwide.

Her annual report found external injuries killed 1,629 Indiana children from 2021 through 2025, though deaths declined by 100 over that period.

Sudden unexpected infant deaths led the toll, followed by transportation accidents and homicides.

For children ages one to 17, firearms were the leading cause of death from 2023 through 2025, with suicides and homicides accounting for 87 percent of firearm deaths.
