Jean Sandefer, 75, of Bicknell, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026. Born in Vincennes on August 3, 1951, to the late Frank and Betty Jo Dupire, Jean grew up with a steadfast compassion and an unwavering work ethic that defined her entire life. A proud graduate of North Knox High School, she pursued her calling in healthcare at Vincennes University, earning her associate’s degree in nursing.
On November 3, 1972, Jean married the love of her life, Stephen Sandefer. Together, they built a life rooted in devotion to family and service to others. Jean possessed a rare, profound passion for nurturing and caring for people. Throughout her life, that profound care extended far beyond the professional sphere-she lovingly cared for her parents and her husband through their final days with immense grace and selflessness, while touching the lives of hundreds of individuals throughout her remarkable career.
A true leader and advocate in healthcare, Jean began her nursing career in the Intensive & Coronary Care Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital. Her extraordinary clinical skills and leadership led her to serve as Director of Nursing at Crestview Long Term Care Facility, Director of Nursing/Senior DNS at Eastgate Manor Nursing Facility, and Assistant Director of Clinical Operations at Crestview. Her exceptional dedication to senior care was recognized statewide in 1995 when she was named “Indiana Director of Nursing of the Year” by the Indiana Health Care Association. Jean continued sharing her vast wisdom and guidance as a Regulatory Nurse Consultant with Fields’ Healthcare Consultants, ensuring quality, compliance, and compassionate care across the region.
Outside of her professional life, Jean lived with energy, warmth, and joy. She cherished riding alongside her late husband, Steve, as they traveled all across the country on numerous summer motorcycle trips, making countless unforgettable memories with their fellow riding friends. Whether she was hosting cherished holiday dinners, cheering with immense pride for her grandchildren at their sporting events, spending quiet moments with her beloved dog Mable, or perfecting the art of making the absolute best caramel corn around, Jean brought immense warmth to those around her. She was a proud member of the Nurse Service Organization and left a permanent imprint on the hearts of all who knew her. Her fierce love, steady guidance, and generous spirit will be profoundly missed.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Betty Jo Dupire; her beloved husband, Steve Sandefer; her infant daughter, Melissa Jean Sandefer; and her sister, Brenda Hale.
She is survived by her loving sons, Stephen C. (Carie Blair) Sandefer and Matthew (Hilary) Sandefer; her cherished grandchildren, Tanner Sandefer, Caylee (Matthew) Joyce, Ethan Sandefer, Hayden Sandefer, and Ellie Sandefer; her brother, Don (Debbie) Dupire; her nieces, Melissa (Doug) Horton and Miranda (Levi) Hostetter; and many extended family members, colleagues, and dear friends.
